Satsang with Swamiji

Question: The purpose of human life is evolution of the soul. Is pain the only method or way for the soul to evolve?

Swamiji: In pain a person learns more. In Gurubani it is said, “Dukh daru, sukh rog bhaya” – “Suffering is medicine and pleasure is the disease.” In pain a common devotee remembers God more. In pain, your friends are tested.

Question: It is true that people remember God more when they are suffering. But they remember Him out of selfishness, not out of love. They ask Him to remove their suffering. Of what use is such remembrance?

Swamiji: Remembering God in any way, for any reason, will always have some benefit.

Question: Does our love for God eventually have to become unconditional in order to bear fruit?

Swamiji: The selfless love is most powerful. It can move the mountains.

Question: How can I develop love for God’s name?

Swamiji: When you love God, you love God’s name also. God’s love is developed by reading and reflecting on the biographies of sages like Ramakrishna Paramahansa. God’s love is also developed by dispassion from what is temporary and changing, and by repeating God’s name. God is permanent Bliss. Who does not want permanent Bliss? But a common person is seeking permanent Bliss in favourable situations. How can one find permanent Bliss in the situations which are not permanent, which are changing? God is Sat-Chit-Anand – Absolute Existence, Absolute Life, Absolute Consciousness and Absolute Bliss.
